Göreme in Cappadocia has emerged on the world stage as one of the most scenic areas in the world. Last time I visited was over 25 years ago so it was a bit of a shock to revisit this fabulous area.
Gone are the shabby hotels and hostels, you will now find boutique hotels converted from the original cave houses. It is now very up-market and smart.
If you are looking at visiting Göreme from Orhaniye you can either fly via Istanbul, but in reality it is quicker and easier to get the overnight coach from Marmaris coach station directly to Göreme. If you have any memories of catching buses in Turkey from your student days, think again! The coaches are now mostly luxury Mercedes Benz with on-board video, WiFi and drinks service.
You can easily cover Göreme in two days so you can combine a trip to Göreme with a one hour flight to Istanbul to do a little city sightseeing before heading back home.
If you visit Göreme you MUST take a balloon ride. Even for somebody scared on heights (me) it was a fantastic experience, flying with experienced pilots in very carefully controlled airspace. Please see the video below for an introduction to talking a balloon ride in Cappadocia.
